  Description:  
    Abstract:  The USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center archive holds data collected by the Landsat suite of satellites, beginning with Landsat 1 in 1972.  Landsat 8, launched February 11, 2013, is the latest Landsat sensor.
    Purpose:  The Landsat archive provides a rich collection of information about the Earth's land surface.  Major characteristics of changes to the surface of the planet can be detected, measured, and analyzed using Landsat data.  The information obtainable from the historical and current Landsat data play a key role in studying surface changes through time.
    Supplemental_Information:  Landsat represents the world's longest continuously acquired collection of space-based moderate-resolution land remote sensing data.  As a joint initiative between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA), the Landsat Project and the data it collects support government, commercial, industrial, civilian, military, and educational communities throughout the United States and world.  Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI)/Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) Collection 1 provides a quality-controlled selection of radiometrically calibrated and consistently geolocated data; particular geodetic accuracy and error tolerances are specified to align pixels for time series analysis through the full Landsat record.   Data_Set_Credit:  The Landsat Program, as defined by Congress in 1992 and amended by Presidential Decision Directive/NSTC-3 in May 1994, is managed cooperatively by the NASA and the USGS.  Responsibility for construction of the spacecraft and instrument lies with NASA.  The Landsat Program is part of NASA's Earth Observing System, a global change initiative administered by NASA's Earth Science Enterprise.  Data processing, archiving, and distribution are performed by the USGS.  The primary ground station, the data handling facility and archive are located at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in Sioux Falls, SD.  NASA managed flight operations from the control center at the Goddard Space Flight Center until October 1, 2000, at which time responsibility for flight operations transferred to the USGS.  The ground system is able to distribute Landsat 8 OLI/TIR data within 24 hours of its reception at the EROS.     Attribute_Accuracy_Report:  The identification of features is provided by the distinct electromagnetic energy it emits, reflects, or otherwise transmits, this is called the spectral signature.  Other signatures such as tone (lightness or darkness), texture (surface roughness or smoothness), pattern, shadow, shape, and size are just as important.  Thus, through the use of the Operational Land Imager (OLI)  sensor, such elements as water features, soils, and vegetation can be identified and distinguished from each other.

      Process_Description:  Landsat standard data products are processed using the Level-1 Product Generation System (LPGS), and are processed to the best level of correction possible (Level-1TP = Precision Terrain correction).  If full terrain correction is not possible, the data is processed to Level-1GS (Systematic) or Level-1GT (Systematic Terrain) correction.  Processing details can be found on http://landsat.usgs.gov/landsat-processing-details.  All Landsat 8 Level-1 Collection 1 data have been reprocessed and organized by a tiered inventory structure.  During Collection 1 reprocessing, all Landsat scenes in the USGS archive are assigned to a specific "Tier" based on data quality and level of processing.
